A reciprocating air compressor is a type of positive-displacement compressor that uses a piston to compress air within a cylinder. The piston moves back and forth (reciprocates), drawing in air on the intake stroke and compressing it on the compression stroke before discharging it into a storage tank or a pneumatic system. These compressors are commonly used in both industrial and automotive applications.
There are two main types of reciprocating air compressors:
- Single-Stage Compressors: The air is compressed in one stage (in one cylinder) to a maximum pressure of about 125 psi (pounds per square inch).
- Two-Stage Compressors: The air is compressed in two cylinders. First, air is compressed in a low-pressure cylinder and then in a high-pressure cylinder, resulting in higher output pressures (usually up to 175 psi or more).
How Reciprocating Air Compressors Work
- Intake Stroke: The piston moves down, drawing air into the cylinder through an intake valve.
- Compression Stroke: The piston moves up, compressing the air inside the cylinder. As the air is compressed, its pressure increases.
- Discharge Stroke: The compressed air is forced out of the cylinder and into the storage tank or system through an exhaust valve.
This continuous movement of the piston (reciprocating action) generates the compressed air needed for a wide range of applications.
